Blog 8. T.V

T.V is forever changing. It used to be black and white, and now its colors; it used to be on when the broadcast is aired and it turned off when nothing is aired and now there's access to shows 24/7. Even the content of T.V is different than before. The reality shows, the censors, the ridiculous jokes and comments, the sexuality, the obscenity, the type of acting would of never been on T.V when it first came popular. There had been drastic changes with television.

I believe the drastic change is mostly due to the change in audience behaviors. There probably are many other factors that come in play, but the most influential factor is its core audience. People are always changing and adapting to the new technology, new styles, new behaviors, and television follows.

We had to a read a chapter about Television in the book; they talked about the T.V on the computer or the web on the T.V. Who would of ever thought there could be internet on T.Vs. With technology today, there are cords where you can plug it from the computer to the t.v where the t.v is your computer screen. And then there is t.v on the computer. Websites like Youtube is similar to that. It doesn't have full movie lengths, but there are clips or snippets. I was on there the other day and I guess Youtube now has High Digital or HD videos; really awesome quality. Mabybe soon, there will be T.V's with connected webcams like come computer monitors have. Crazy isn't it?

The T.V and it's contents are fascinating, but there is also the other things that comes with a T.V.: the remote, the DVD or DVR, Discs and now Blue Ray Discs.

It is like the world is competing against itself to to see who has the better and bigger stuff. Who will attract more costumers who will have the newest and latest technology. I blame this on the people, also. People are materialistic and wanting the much better things and that's what the industry is trying to work by. It's like a spiral that's spiraling out bigger and bigger. We started off small with box called T.V and some broadcasters, but to further satisfy and make more money the invention of color, more shows, and etc. But the box was too ugly, so they made it look better; different brands compete against each other to get audiences and the cycle continues.

Who knows, maybe in the future, you will snap your fingers and there is the robotic flying t.v ready to follow your orders.

Reflections on Media

Over all media is everywhere; wether we like it or not. Each and everyday we are surrounded by thousands of ads which has an impact on our lives. Some might sill be in disbelief and will not admit the fact that media has an impact on them. It doesn't even have to be a big impact; it could be as little as wanting McDonalds after seeing the McDonalds bag sitting in the blue Dodge passenger seat next to you at Super America.

We ca not get rid of media because it is part of America. Yes, we could stablish some regulations, but will it help? Media ia said to be invasive, intruding, a slam in the face, annoying, and all of the above. But it is their job to be intrusive, because if they don't announce their product in such a way, how would America know about the product or to buy it? Hundreds of years ago, it was the word of mouth, but in today's terms, it isn't that simple or realistic as it would be many many years ago.

As much as we hate it, it's only up to us to get rid of it ourselves. If we don't like the media, we tune it out. If it's bad and not appropiate then it's up to you or the parents to make sure it won't be seen or won't be an impact. We just have to be informed consumers. Make sure the product is realiable, realistic, and working. It is like getting mad at the advertisement calls people get. I bet the people working don't like being disrepected all the time by us because you know we'll yell and tell them not to call back, or swear at them, or jut hang up on them when they are just doing their job.

Media is here, it's been here, and it's here to stay. We just have to be imformed consumers. Life is full of choices and we have choices when it comes to media. Think of it as entertainment in our lives. (:

Product Placement

I believe product placement is really effective. Logically speaking, the industry do not give hundreds dollars, or even more, away knowing that putting their product on T.V shows or movies is not effective so it must be effective. Personally speaking, whenever I see a movie where there is a party scene and someone is handing around a Coco Cola, I start to grow a craving for it right then.

America's foundation is built on needs, wants, and goals that every person tries to pursue. The advertisement industry is aware of this and uses this to their advantage. They throw products in television shows and movies, especially in the scene where the it makes the product so satisfying that the viewer will develop a desire to have it. It is like a commercial, except for this tiny commercial is played with real actors in a movie the viewer want to watch; unlike when commercials turns on after a show, the viewer tends to pay no attention to it what so ever. I believe this is why product placement is so effective. It's because the advertising industry knows how to capture the viewers attention towards the products and that is putting it in television shows and movies that the viewer likes.

We see thousands of ads and logos and products everyday. I bet we even remember a lot of logos or songs that goes with a certain product. As long as that classical conditioning is placed in television shows or movies, a light bulb will automatically go off and say, that's Nikes! From personal experience, I tend to recognize something even if it's placed small on the screen or off to a corner. That is because I know what it is. For an example, Snickers is very popular candy, I myself love it and so does everybody else. If we see a Snickers wrapper, we'll recognize with no hesitation. If I was to see a tiny Snickers wrapper placed near the left corner of the screen on, lets say the television show 90210, I will notice it because it's such a poplar candy that I have been exposed to for years. Then I tell myself, I want one.

It doesn't have to be a product that is well known. I've seen products that I probably never knew existed until I have seen some show. The reason why I know it exist now is because the product placement in that particular show is right in my face. It is there, bold and cleat, making it's point of it's existence.

Product placement in television is a smart way to get the viewer's attention. Commercials work sometimes, but when people watch T.V, they watch the show, not the commercials, so the commercials are usually tuned out. But when the viewer is watching a show or movie they like, with no interruption, BAM comes Brad Pitt holding a green starburst, and I will say, well think, he is so cute! I want some starburst now. You see how effective that is? It's persuasion without words, like art.

Analyze advertisments

I never knew people put so much effort into an advertisement just to sell their product. My thought was that advertisements is there to catch a person's eye so the consumer will be like oh yeah that's cool, I might want it. There is so much more than just that; advertisements plays with people's mind psychologically with the use of words, the person presenting the product, etc.

Over the past couple day, seeing billboards, T.V commercials, magazine ads, in store ads, and many more, I've noticed almost, if not all ads, consist of the American core value of material comfort. I've come to believe the nature of America is to have and want material things in order to achieve their comfort, or to fit in, and be social because most of the ads I saw made this true. They portrayed their product as a solution to being cool, being in style, having the finer things. These ads uses advertising claims and propaganda devices to get to people's mind. I remember seeing something like, I forgot what the name of the car was, but it went something like this, It's a Honda civic. Yes, by the look of the car I knew that, so so what? What about a Honda Civic? Just by that phrase are we supposed to think Omg! it's a Honda Civic!?

Every single ad claim they are better than something else. Like Venus the shaver. They advertise their new shaving razor; it has four blades. It claims it is different and unique because it had four blades for a more ultimate touch, but like every other product they came out with seems to be different and unique so what makes this one so different?

Most ads I saw are usually targeted as women, maybe it's just me, but most were women. I think the advertisers believe women have a big influence on men or maybe the other way around, but if a women is targeted, men will like it, women will buy more. They, as in ads, increase social risks. if you don't buy this, you will be fat or ugly or not fit in and nobody will want to talk to you. Most ads say if you buy this, you are saving money, reducing financial risks. 9 out of 10 products out there, claim to have best offers, exclusive deals, low prices, and efficiency.

Ads isn't all about standing out; once they stand out, you read it, and the words printed on the ads plays mind tricks on you. Advertisers do many things just to persuade. To me, it seems invasive. Just a little.

Media Images and Sterotypes

Everyday we are surrounded by media images that portrays all sorts of sterotypes. Ecspecially the sterotypes of women and men. From magazines to billboards, they have pictures of gorgeous looking women who most likely don't exist. They make this girls pretty, skinny, flawless skin and just perfect. But really who is perfect? From day one of our society, women was seen as the mother nature. We nourish and take care of our kids. That's our "duty". No no no, I say. It's only our "duty" because society, the culture, had made it that way. What if from day one, instead of the women taking care of the kids, but the dad? How different would it be today? Women is always seen as the weak one, the one that has a heart and shows emotions? What's so wrong with showing emotions? It doesn't make us a baby or weak? It says we have feelings and a heart that pumps. I'm not saying guys don't because they do, but media and steroptypes was always the guys would hide their feelings be strong. Then when a girl trys to be strong, we are called a boy. Or when a boy shows emotions, they are called gay or baby or other not nice stuff. Kids portrays these sterotypes quite well; it's not like we do it purposely too, but it just happens unconciously. For an example, I know one of my guy friends are having girl problems. He ask his guy friends for some advice and they go, Man up. Be a man. What exactly is being a man? Not showing you care? Being a dead robot? Come on, even a robot has emotions. These sterotypes and media images distorts the true perspective of things and people. These sterotypes sometimes are very dangerous. Girls out there who try to be this skinny and starve themselves. It's super unhealthy, and they could die. We can't get rid of steroptypes, but we can tone down the media images and how women or men "should" be.

90210. American Core Values

I believe the american value that is mostly represented in the show 90210is "youthfulness". If anyone has seen this show, you'll know these boys and girls are all about being young, having fun, falling in love for the first time, break ups, and all the typical teenage life.

Naiomi, for an example, plays a very interesting role. I consider her one of the main characters. She is this girl who's full of life. She's young and pretty with guys always at her knees. Like every typical highschool, there's always that one pretty girl that guys die for, but she just isn't all that nice. Personality wise. Naiomi is pretty much like that.

Then there is Annie. She's has this freshness feel of a young person. She knows what she wants and she'll do try to get it. She fell in love for the first time with this hottie. Get's hit with a horrible some what of a break up. It makes you think back to when you were young and falling in love and full of energy and then going down the drain at one point or another.

This show takes place in Beverly Hills and if you look at all the girls there, you can tell "material comfort" plays a role in this show also. For young kids in highschool, they sure have a sense of fashion of a fashion expertise; or whatever you call the fashion expertise people. They curl their hair all nicely, they wear clothes that could be worn to evening partys or something. They all drive nice cars and live in nice houses. They even have hotel parties whenever they want. It defenitly shows that material really is comforting.

Us, the viewers, sit there and watch it in awh. Well I do. Im's like when Annie has a crush on this super hottie and is so shy to approach him, I'm like I remember when I had a super hottie as a crush. Or when I see all the cute clothes they are wearing, I want them because it will make me happy.

Media Blog Topic 2

After watching the video I was like wow. I see those every day to day commercials or advertisements for kids, but it never came to my attention that it was more serious than it seems. It was pretty scary. I could understand why they would use kids to advertise for kiddy toys or etc. Kids are very influential and can be very influenced. Once they come out of their mothers womb, their parents wants to do everything they could possible for them. Not only that, kids can be persuaded too easily. The media knows this and uses it to their advantage. My little 5 year old sister would see something on T.V or in a store and she'll go crazyy nuts because she wants it sooooo badly. Eventually, my parents would give in because they didn't want her to cry or scream continuously. The video said media purposely target at kids because they start wanting and consuming at an early age and hopefully will continue through this media saturation that media is drowning them in. It's crazy. The video showed the part where kids are running down the aisle looking at cereal boxes that has cool media on it to influence the kids to want it. That definitely brought many childhood memories. Man I bet my mom used to hate me. I was like those kids. I would look at the same cereal box, but chooses the one that says COOL TOY INSIDE!

When the video showed the part where kids being obsessed, having ADD, and our generation has a life expectancy shorter than our parents, and other types of disorder. I had to think what would this have to do with media? But then I was like again wowed because media is causing all of this. Like McDonalds. They advertise Mcdonalds like crazy, and kids want to go their to get their happy meal with toys in it or to see Ronald Mcdonald. McDonalds makes you fat. I learned this is health class after watching Supersize me. That movie was horribly disgusting, but yet I don't stop eating it. Why? I don't know? Maybe its media? They even have the redbox at Mcdonalds. It's like Hey! Eat Mcdonalds and enjoy a great 1$ movie. It's not Hey! Eat popcorn and enjoy the movie anymore. Kids are like the media's product to get their word out and then again kids are their consumers. The world is pretty cruel don't you think?
